When a 1998 Mazda 626 key is done wrong, it doesn't partially work. It fails. The engine might crank but not start. The push-to-start might detect the fob one morning and refuse the next. Or the key programs initially but the car rejects it after a drive cycle because the chip data doesn't match spec.
A dog walker at the pet supply store in Simi Valley had a key made by another locksmith for her 626 that stopped working after about a week. It started fine for the first few days, then push-to-start started saying "key not detected" intermittently. She thought the car had an electrical problem, but the car was fine.
The previous locksmith had used a chip that was close to spec but not exact. On Mazda's keyless system, a near-match can pass initial registration but fail after deeper verification over multiple drive cycles. I used my VVDI2 to read the chip in her bad key, confirmed the data was wrong, and programmed a new key with the correct ID49 chip. Her fob, FCC ID , was a -button smart key. The battery was also low, which made intermittent detection worse.
The replacement has been working since. Her cost was 95. Dealer would have charged 200.
