My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard job for a mobile automotive locksmith. We use specialized tools to remove the broken piece without damaging your Mercedes's ignition cylinder. Mercedes chrome key shells and flip-key housings are known to crack, especially on older models. One ML430 owner reported the flip hinge casting breaking and the blade falling between the seat and tunnel. Once the broken piece is out, we can cut a new key and program it on the spot, or transplant your electronics into a new shell if the chip and board are still good.

What is a Remote Head Key?

A Remote Head Key is the type of key your 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class uses. It combines an emergency key blade with an electronic module containing an encrypted chip and 4 buttons for remote and keyless go functions. The chip communicates with your Mercedes's EIS/EZS module to authorize the engine to start. If the blade breaks but the electronics are intact, we can often move the PCB and NEC chip into a new shell without reprogramming. If your car still opens but will not start, try removing the keyless go button cover and inserting the emergency blade directly into the ignition slot. If you have a push-to-start model, hold the fob directly against the start button while pressing the brake. If none of that works, the issue may be the fob, the EIS/EZS module, or the steering lock ESL. Mercedes owners report that "bad key or EIS" are the two most common causes, and that is when you call us for a diagnosis.

What is the FCC ID for the 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class key?

With us the gap is smaller, but AKL still costs more because of the extra work involved. That is why we always tell customers: get a spare made while you still have a working key.
