2010 Saturn SKY
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you wipe a lost or stolen key so it can't be used to start the car anymore?

Yes. During a security reset, all stored transponder keys are cleared from the vehicle's memory and only the keys you authorize get written back in. A lost key that was registered before the reset will not start the car after it's done.

Q: My 2010 SKY uses a transponder key, not a smart key. Does it have any kind of backup blade or emergency entry option?

Since the SKY uses a standard transponder turn-key, there's no hidden blade inside a fob. The key itself is the blade. If it's lost or broken, a new one gets cut to your lock, either by pulling the key code or by decoding the cylinder on site. No fob, no emergency insert, just the key.

Q: My SKY cranks fine but stalls right after startup. The key looks correct. What's going on?

That two-second crank-and-die is almost always the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. It's one of the most consistent symptoms owners report with this vehicle when a key hasn't been properly enrolled. The engine starts because the key blade is cut right, then the immobilizer cuts fuel because it doesn't see an authorized chip. A copied key from a hardware store will do exactly this. So will a correctly cut key that was never programmed.

Q: Can I program a replacement transponder key myself, or do I need a tech?

You need a tech with the right equipment. The 2010 SKY does not have an onboard add-a-key sequence you can run yourself. Programming requires connecting to the OBD port with a professional tool that communicates with the immobilizer. There's no ignition-turn trick or button sequence for this system. If you bought a blank key online, the cut and the chip programming both still need to be done by someone with the proper tools.

2010 Saturn SKY Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked off Shadowridge Drive, over near the golf course side of the neighborhood. He'd been carrying a spare key for years, never needed it until the day he left his only working key on a restaurant table somewhere in Vista. Gone. Spare was home. He was stuck.

By the time I arrived he'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in and plan for a wait. He didn't love that answer, which is how he ended up calling me instead.

The SKY is a low-slung two-seater, so I'm kneeling on the asphalt doing this job, which is just part of the deal with that car. I decoded the lock, cut a new key blade to match, then connected to the OBD port and enrolled the transponder. The immobilizer accepted it on the first attempt.

I watched him turn it over. Started right up, no stall, no warning light.

He mentioned the dealer quote before he drove off. I told him I understood why he called me instead. That was the whole conversation about price.

Saturn SKY Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2010 Saturn SKY?▼

Skip the tow, call a mobile locksmith first. All-keys-lost on the SKY means the immobilizer has no enrolled key at all, so the car won't start, but it doesn't need to be at a dealer to get fixed. I come to your location in Vista with the equipment to decode the lock, cut a new key, and enroll it through the OBD port. The price I give you on the phone is what you pay.
