I lost all my Mazda keys. Can you still make a new one?

Yes. All-keys-lost is one of the most common calls we get, and we handle it on site for most Mazda models. The process involves resetting the immobilizer, cutting a new key from the vehicle's lock data, and programming everything fresh. Mazda owners who call the dealer for an AKL job get quoted $600 to $900 and are told to tow the vehicle in. A 2022 CX-5 owner was quoted $898 at the dealer before towing. We come to you and do the same job at your location for significantly less. On newer models that require MDARS-level security access, we have the credentials to handle it.

Do I need to tow my car to the dealer if I have no keys?

Not for most Mazda models. A mobile locksmith with the right tools and credentials can handle all-keys-lost right where the vehicle sits. One CX-5 owner was facing a $698 key charge plus $200 labor plus towing at the dealer, nearly $1,000 before driving away. A mobile locksmith did the entire job on site for $400. Mazda dealers default to telling you to tow because that is the only way they work. We come to you. The only exceptions are certain very new models where MDARS dealer-only software may be required, and we will tell you upfront if that applies to your 2001 Mazda 626.

How long does an all-keys-lost replacement take?

On site, most Mazda AKL jobs take 20 to 45 minutes. On a CX-5, the immobilizer requires a mandatory 7-minute reset countdown before new keys can be registered. On a 2020 Mazda3, the full AKL procedure runs about 20 minutes for two keys. On top of the reset, we cut the new key and program the transponder and remote functions. At the dealer, the same work can take 1 to 2 hours or more because of scheduling, parts availability, and the dealership workflow overhead that turns a 20-minute job into a half-day event.

What battery does the 2001 Mazda 626 key fob use?

The 2001 Mazda 626 uses a CR2032 battery. When we do an all-keys-lost job, the new key always comes with a fresh battery installed. You will not need to worry about battery life on your new key for a long time. We also recommend keeping a spare battery at home once you have your key, since a dead fob on a Mazda smart key system can trigger a "key not detected" warning and leave you unable to start the car even though nothing else is wrong.

Can you make a spare at the same time so I have two keys?

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. Mazda immobilizer systems can store up to six keys, and programming multiple keys in one session is standard. On some older Mazdas, the system actually requires two keys to complete the AKL procedure, so you walk away with a pair by default. Adding a second key while we are already connected costs less than calling us back for a separate visit later because the immobilizer access and security steps are only performed once. If you just went through all-keys-lost, the last thing you want is to be in that situation again.
