A parking garage in South Poway is not where most people expect a key job to happen. But that's exactly where this one went.
A woman called me about her 2008 R8. She was on level P3 of a tight structure, the kind with low clearance and blind corners that a tow truck driver had already refused to attempt. The dealer's answer was to get the car out and bring it in. She had no working key, so that wasn't going anywhere.
I drove my van in to the P2 level, grabbed my tools, and walked down one flight. The R8 was sitting there looking completely unbothered by the situation, which felt a little unfair given where we were.
The job was all-keys-lost on a flip key system. I connected through the OBD port, ran the immobilizer read to pull the security data, and built a new key on site. The flip blade got cut to match the vehicle, the transponder got programmed to the immobilizer, and the remote got paired so lock, unlock, and the third button all tested clean. She watched the whole thing from about four feet away, leaning against a concrete pillar.
The car never moved until she drove it out herself. The dealer had quoted her a figure that assumed she could deliver the car to them, which she couldn't, and a timeline measured in days. I was done and back on P2 before the hour was up.
The garage part is what I remember most. Bad lighting, low ceiling, the whole job done off a folding tray on my knee. The R8 didn't care. It just needed the right key.
