Out near Flinn Springs, off one of those long stretches where there's not much between you and the next town, a guy called me about his 2022 Kia K5. His key blade had snapped inside the door lock. Half of it was still in there.
He'd already called another shop. They told him the lock cylinder would need to come out, maybe get drilled, and he was looking at a full cylinder replacement plus a new smart key. He didn't love that answer, so he kept looking and found me.
I drove out with my extraction tools and a blank that would work for the K5. The fragment came out clean. No scratches on the wafer surfaces, nothing disturbed inside the cylinder. Once I had the lock free to read, I decoded the cut depths directly from it, then cut a new blade to match.
From there it was the programming side. The K5 smart key needs to be enrolled through the OBD port with the right diagnostic equipment. That's not a workaround or a shortcut, it's just how the system works on this generation. New fob, new blade, programmed and tested. Every button, both doors, the trunk release.
He was back on the road in under an hour. The other shop's plan would have taken a day and a half minimum, plus a tow since the cylinder would've been out of commission during the repair. No drilling happened here. That should always be the last option, not the first.
