2006 Kia Spectra
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2006 Kia Spectra Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Winding Walk, I got a call from a guy who'd bought a used 2006 Kia Spectra maybe six months earlier. Single key, no spare, the way a lot of private-party sales go. He'd been meaning to get a backup made. Never got around to it.

Then the key disappeared somewhere between the grocery run and the front door. He turned the apartment upside down. Nothing. He called the dealer first, out of habit. They told him to have it towed in, and the earliest appointment was several days out.

He found me online and figured it was worth a call.

I drove out to Winding Walk that afternoon. The car was sitting in the lot, locked, no key anywhere near it. I worked the door lock to get in and decode the blade profile, then pulled the key data I needed through the OBD port. On a 2006 Spectra, the all-keys-lost sequence wipes the old key memory and lets you register fresh ones, which is exactly what I needed to do since there was nothing left to work with.

Cut the blade to match the lock, registered the transponder chip to the immobilizer, then paired the remote. Tested all four buttons. Tested the start. The car fired right up in the same lot he'd been stranded in.

He asked me about getting a spare made on the spot. We did a second one right there while I had everything set up. He left with two working keys instead of zero.

The dealer quote, once he actually thought about it, would have been the tow plus the appointment plus whatever they charged for the key itself. He saved a good chunk and didn't lose a week of having his car out of commission.
