2000 Volkswagen Cabrio Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A woman from the Encanto Border side of Lemon Grove called me on a Tuesday morning. She had a 2000 Cabrio, the convertible, parked in her driveway. The key turned, the engine caught, and then died within two seconds. Every time. She had already bought a new battery for the fob thinking that was it. Still the same result.
That pattern, engine fires and immediately stalls, points to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. The remote side of her flip key was working fine. Doors locked and unlocked without issue. But the chip the ignition needed to see was either damaged or had lost its registration.
I pulled up to her driveway off a side street near the Lemon Grove boundary. Popped the OBD port, ran the security access for the VW system, and started the key registration process. While the system was working through its sequence, I took a close look at her original key. The blade pivot was slightly bent and the key had clearly taken some force at some point, the kind of thing that can stress the internal electronics without leaving an obvious crack on the outside.
New key went in, transponder enrolled, remote functions synced. Engine started and held on the first turn. I ran it through lock, unlock, and a full start cycle twice before I packed up.
She mentioned the dealer quoted her a wait of several days just to get a service appointment, plus towing because she could not drive it. She got it done in her driveway in under an hour for a fraction of what they wanted.
