I got a call one evening from a guy parked at a pulloff just outside La Mesa, over near the Casa de Oro area. He was a musician, traveling between shows, and had stopped for gas. When he got back in the car, his 2002 Volkswagen Cabrio would not restart. The fob was not responding at all, no remote functions, and the car was treating the key like a stranger.
He had a show in three hours with soundcheck before that. The VW dealer was closed and the nearest open one was not taking walk-ins for anything. He found me online and called from the shoulder.
When I got there I went through the basics first. Battery in the fob was not the problem. The remote circuit board had failed, which is not uncommon on these older flip keys after two decades of heat cycles and pocket abuse. The transponder chip, though, was still intact inside the key head.
That mattered. Reading the transponder data from the original key let me build a working replacement without going the all-keys-lost route. I programmed a fresh flip key to match the immobilizer, cut the blade to the vehicle, and tested remote lock and unlock and confirmed the engine would start cleanly. The whole thing took under an hour at the roadside.
He was back on the highway before 8pm. He did not mention the dealer price. I do not think he cared at that point.
