1996 Buick Riviera Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
People end up with one key on a Buick more often than you'd think. The original buyer got two. The second owner got one because the first owner kept a spare. The third owner gets whatever was in the glovebox. By the time a Buick has changed hands twice, there's almost always one key or none.
A grad school TA at the shared alley behind her duplex in Simi Valley had exactly that story. She bought her 1996 Buick Riviera from a friend of a friend. One key, no spare, and the fob was already cracked at the shell. She'd been driving on a cracked fob for six months because the dealer quoted 200 for a replacement.
I used my IM608 to read the transponder data from her cracked fob since the chip inside was still intact. I decoded the lock, cut two fresh blades, and built two new fobs from the data. Her key, FCC ID KOBUT1BT, was a 4-button fob that I rebuilt into a fresh shell. I showed her the chip from the cracked fob so she could see it was still good.
She went from a cracked, unreliable key to two perfect ones in about 45 minutes. Total was around 95. On a Buick, having two keys isn't a luxury. It's insurance against a very expensive AKL job later.
