Do you need to tow your 2000 Jaguar S-Type to the dealer? Probably not. For most Jaguar models from the mid-2000s through the late 2010s, I handle all-keys-lost right at the car. Some newer models require pulling the KVM for a bench read, which I do on-site with portable equipment.
A night shift ER pharmacist at her brownstone garage in Port Hueneme had her only key die at home around 11:20pm. Her S-Type was in the garage with a smart key system and no fob the car would recognize. She assumed a tow to the Jaguar dealer was inevitable and started looking up costs. I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD port and ran the Jaguar smart key AKL procedure step by step. Her transponder key, FCC ID , was a -button smart key that I programmed in her garage at 11:20 at night. She seemed pretty surprised the whole thing could happen that late.
Her total was 168. The dealer would have been 356 plus the tow. There are some very new Jaguar models where my tools don't fully support AKL yet, and those do go to the dealer. But for the majority of Jaguars on the road, I do all-keys-lost on-site every week.
