Over near Ojai Valley Inn, a retired guy had a 2008 S-Type with a smart key that was falling apart. The housing had cracked right at the key ring loop from one too many drops on the driveway, and the emergency blade was rattling loose inside.
He'd already called the Jaguar dealer. They told him the only fix was a brand new smart key, programmed from scratch. No mention of anything else. Just the full replacement price and a multi-day wait for the part to come in by VIN.
I drove out and looked at the fob on his hood. The circuit board inside, the one carrying the Hitag2 transponder and the 315 MHz RF module, was fine. No cracked solder joints, no corrosion. The KVM just needed to keep talking to the same chip it already knew.
I connected my ACDP to the OBD port and pulled a backup of the KVM EEPROM data first, because you don't touch a Jaguar immobilizer without a safety net. Then I transferred his working internals into a new aftermarket shell, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and seated the emergency blade properly.
Tested every button. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and the fifth button for the rear window. Then push-to-start and passive Keyless-Go entry on both front doors.
Everything worked. Same fob identity, new plastic. He got to keep his registered key for a fraction of what the dealer wanted to start over from zero.
