I got a call from a guy in Downtown Ojai, retired, living off one of those quiet streets near the arcade. He had a 2008 Jaguar S-Type and a fob that had taken a hard drop on his garage floor. The housing had cracked clean through at the key ring loop, the emergency blade insert was flopping around, and the whole thing looked like it belonged in a parts bin. I backed up what I needed from the key module before touching anything, moved his working electronics into a new housing, and dropped in a fresh CR2032. Then I walked every button, checked that the car was reading the fob correctly through the proximity system, and confirmed the emergency blade seated right in the new shell.
Took about forty minutes total. He watched the whole thing from his driveway.
The dealer was going to charge him for a complete new fob and full programming when only the plastic had failed. He saved a good chunk, and his original key data stayed exactly where it was.
