2004 Jaguar S-Type
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much harder is all-keys-lost on a 2004 S-Type compared to just adding a spare?

Noticeably harder. With a working key present, adding a spare is a clean programming job. When every key is gone, the immobilizer has to be cleared of all stored key data and then learn the new keys from scratch. On the 2004 S-Type that process requires professional diagnostic equipment and takes longer than a simple spare add.

Q: Do aftermarket remote flip keys actually work on the 2004 S-Type, or do I need an OEM part?

Aftermarket keys for this generation can work, but the quality varies a lot. The fob shell, blade, and electronics all need to match what this car expects. The factory fob ID on your original key is a starting point for sourcing a compatible replacement, but not every aftermarket unit sold online is built to that spec, even if the listing says it fits.

Q: The buttons on my S-Type fob work but the car won't start. Is my key dead?

Not necessarily. On the 2004 S-Type, the remote entry function and the immobilizer are separate systems. The fob buttons talk to the car via radio to lock and unlock. The transponder chip in the key talks to the immobilizer when the blade is in the ignition. If the buttons work but the car won't start, the radio side of the fob is fine, but something is off on the ignition recognition side.

Q: My fob blade broke off at the pivot. Can it be repaired or do I need a whole new key?

Usually repairable. The flip key on the 2004 S-Type has a blade that hinges on a small pivot pin inside the fob body. The pin can fail, the blade can crack at the base, or the housing itself can split. None of that means the electronics inside are gone. In most cases, the transponder and circuit board can be moved into a new fob housing with a freshly cut replacement blade.

2004 Jaguar S-Type Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in South Surfside on a Tuesday afternoon when I got the call. A woman parked near the water had been using the emergency blade in her 2004 Jaguar S-Type because the fob had stopped talking to the car. At some point, the blade tip snapped off inside the door lock. The cylinder hadn't been used in years and it just grabbed the blade and held it.

Another locksmith she called said the lock would need to be drilled. New cylinder, new keys, and a number that made her stomach drop. She found my number and asked for a second opinion before she agreed to that.

When I got there, the fob body was still intact. The electronics were fine. The blade was the only casualty. I used a broken key extractor set and worked the fragment out of the door cylinder without touching the wafers inside. No scratches, no damage to the lock. Then I decoded the lock while I had it accessible, cut a fresh blade to match, and rebuilt the whole unit into a new fob housing since the original casing had cracked during the break.

When I handed it back, she folded the blade in and out a couple of times like she was making sure it was real. Both the fob buttons and the blade worked exactly as they should.

No drilling. No cylinder replacement. Fraction of what the first locksmith quoted her.

Jaguar S-Type Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace my 2004 Jaguar S-Type key?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. Jaguar dealers on a key job for a vehicle this age can still hit you with diagnostic time, a programming fee, and parts markup that adds up fast. The 2004 S-Type takes a remote flip key that needs to be cut to your vehicle and programmed to the immobilizer.
