2006 Jaguar S-Type
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How does mobile key replacement work for a 2006 Jaguar S-Type?

You call, give me your VIN and a quick description of what happened to the key, and I confirm the right fob and blade for your vehicle before I even drive over. When I arrive, I decode or reference the blade cut, program the new flip key through the diagnostic port using equipment that speaks the S-Type's key management protocol, and test everything: remote lock, remote unlock, the other buttons, and the ignition.

Q: What do I need to have ready when you arrive?

Your vehicle, a valid photo ID, and proof of ownership. Registration works. I pull the VIN from the dash or door jamb on arrival to verify everything before cutting or programming anything. That's it on your end. If you're adding a spare rather than replacing a lost key, have your existing working fob with you. The S-Type's system needs it in the session.

Q: My 2006 S-Type remote works sometimes and not others. Is the fob dying or is it something else?

Intermittent range and spotty button response on these are almost always battery-related first. The fob uses a CR2032, and as it weakens you'll get inconsistent response before it quits entirely. Try a fresh battery and make sure the contacts inside the fob are clean and seated properly. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the next thing to look at is whether the fob has taken any physical damage.

Q: Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself to my 2006 S-Type?

Not on this vehicle. The S-Type's key management system from this generation does not have a DIY onboard relearn sequence for the remote. Programming requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. Buying the fob online is fine and people do it to save on the part cost, but you still need someone with the right tools to pair it to the car.

2006 Jaguar S-Type Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a stretch of parking along J Street Corridor in Port Hueneme where I've done more than a few jobs, and this one stuck with me because of how patient the guy was about the whole situation.

Semi-retired architect, 2006 Jaguar S-Type, bought it certified pre-owned a few years back. He'd been running on one key the entire time and finally decided to do something about it. Called the Jaguar dealer first. They gave him a number that made him pause, told him to schedule a morning drop-off, and said plan for most of the day. He had a site walk that morning. Dropping the car at a dealer wasn't happening.

His buddy pointed him to me. I met him in the restaurant lot off J Street, which was fine because I work wherever the car is.

I decoded the door lock to get the blade cut right, verified the fob was the correct unit for his vehicle, and ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port using my JLR-capable equipment. The key management module on these S-Types from this generation requires all present keys to be enrolled together, so I walked him through why his original needed to stay in the session. He watched the whole thing. When I explained the wafer decode, he started sketching something on a napkin. Occupational habit, I guess.

Forty minutes. Both keys working. He tested the remote lock and unlock himself, then folded the blade in and out a couple of times like he was checking a pocketknife. Satisfied.

The dealer quote never really came up again. He just said he appreciated not sitting in a waiting room.

Jaguar S-Type Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I need to bring my 2006 Jaguar S-Type somewhere for key replacement?▼

No. I come to you, wherever the car is parked in the Port Hueneme area, including along the J Street Corridor. You don't drive anywhere, you don't schedule a drop-off, and you don't wait for parts to be ordered. The dealer situation is different. If you have a working key, you can drive it in, but you're still booking time in the service bay and waiting.
