There's a stretch of parking along J Street Corridor in Port Hueneme where I've done more than a few jobs, and this one stuck with me because of how patient the guy was about the whole situation.
Semi-retired architect, 2006 Jaguar S-Type, bought it certified pre-owned a few years back. He'd been running on one key the entire time and finally decided to do something about it. Called the Jaguar dealer first. They gave him a number that made him pause, told him to schedule a morning drop-off, and said plan for most of the day. He had a site walk that morning. Dropping the car at a dealer wasn't happening.
His buddy pointed him to me. I met him in the restaurant lot off J Street, which was fine because I work wherever the car is.
I decoded the door lock to get the blade cut right, verified the fob was the correct unit for his vehicle, and ran the programming sequence through the diagnostic port using my JLR-capable equipment. The key management module on these S-Types from this generation requires all present keys to be enrolled together, so I walked him through why his original needed to stay in the session. He watched the whole thing. When I explained the wafer decode, he started sketching something on a napkin. Occupational habit, I guess.
Forty minutes. Both keys working. He tested the remote lock and unlock himself, then folded the blade in and out a couple of times like he was checking a pocketknife. Satisfied.
The dealer quote never really came up again. He just said he appreciated not sitting in a waiting room.
