In the Berry Park area of Imperial Beach, a woman who does interior design work had been running on one key for her 2001 Audi Allroad for longer than she wanted to admit. She bought the car used. One flip key came with it. She kept meaning to get a spare and kept not doing it.
She finally called the dealer. They told her they would need to source the key, she should plan on a few days, and she would need to drop the car off for a programming appointment on top of that. She called me the same evening.
I parked at her place in Berry Park and started with the lock. Using a decode tool designed for this keyway, I read the wafer positions from the door cylinder so I could cut a blade to match without needing the original as a template. That matters because the original key on these cars has years of wear on it, and cutting directly from a worn key produces a worn copy.
Once the blade was cut, the transponder got enrolled through the OBD port. The immobilizer on these early Allroads communicates with the chip every time you turn the key, and if that chip is not registered, the engine cranks and shuts right back down. After programming, I tested the start, ran all four buttons on the fob, and confirmed the remote functions were reading correctly.
Total time was right around 35 minutes. She got the spare she had been putting off for months, done in the driveway, for a fraction of what the dealer had quoted. The dealer route was not bad advice. It just was not the only option.
