She was at the rental car return lot in Spring Valley, right near Dictionary Hill, early on a weekday morning.
She was switching back to her own 2021 Audi Q3 after a trip, and somewhere between checking out of the hotel and getting to the lot, her only Audi key had vanished. The hotel did a room check. I was there in about 35 minutes. The Q3 uses a flip-style key with a metal blade that turns in the ignition, and it carries a transponder chip. All-keys-lost on this car means I have no working reference key, so I connect to the OBD port, access the immobilizer through the diagnostic interface, pull the security data, and generate a new key from scratch. The blade gets cut on my machine right there in the lot. Then the transponder chip in the new key gets enrolled to the car's security system. The whole process took me just under an hour, working off the tailgate of my van.
She tested it herself. Ignition on, engine running. She handed the rental keys to the attendant, started her Q3, and left for the airport with real time to spare.
The dealer comparison barely came up. She just needed the problem solved that morning, and that is what happened.
