I got a call from a woman parked in the Westwood area of Rancho Bernardo, near one of the shopping plazas off Bernardo Center Drive. Her 2000 Chrysler Cirrus would crank but die within a second of starting. She thought it was a fuel issue. Her neighbor thought it was the starter. Neither of them was thinking about the key.
I asked one question over the phone: has anyone cut a copy of the key recently? Pause. Then yes, she said, a hardware store copy, about three weeks ago, and the original had gone missing not long after.
That confirmed it. The hardware store blade fit the ignition cylinder fine, which is why she could turn it. But the replacement had no programmed transponder, so the immobilizer killed the engine before it could stay running. Classic Sentry Key situation on a late-nineties Chrysler.
I pulled up to the lot, connected to the OBD port, and got the car's security data read out. With no original working key present, the onboard relearn wasn't an option, so the programming had to go through the tool. New key, cut to her vehicle, transponder programmed on site. She turned the key, the engine caught and held, and she sat there for a moment like she was waiting for it to stall again.
It didn't. The dealer had quoted her a multi-day turnaround because they needed to order parts. I had what I needed in the van. Total time from my arrival to her leaving was about 45 minutes.
