A guy pulled into the Bayside area of Imperial Beach after driving up from the border, loaded down with road-trip gear stuffed into his 2012 Fiat 500. He had tried to unlock the door manually after his fob went unresponsive, forced it a little too hard in a hurry, and the blade snapped clean inside the door cylinder. Half of it was still inside the lock.
He had already called one locksmith who told him the cylinder would need to be drilled out and replaced, and quoted him a number that made him sit on the curb for a while before he called me.
First thing I did was pull data through the OBD port to get what I needed for the transponder side of the job before I touched the lock itself. Then I got into the door cylinder with my extraction tools, working carefully around the broken fragment without touching the wafer surfaces. The piece came out clean. No damage to the cylinder, no drilling, no drama.
Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it by reading each wafer position directly. Cut a new blade from those readings. Assembled the flip mechanism, programmed the transponder and remote functions, tested everything: door lock, unlock, trunk release, ignition start.
His original cylinder still works. His original lock still works. The key I handed him fit and functioned like the car had never seen a bad day.
He asked me what the drilling-and-replacement job would have actually involved. I told him: new cylinder, rekeying, still needing a programmed key on top of it. He saved a significant amount. More than that, he kept his original hardware, which matters when you are driving a car with a lot of personality built into the little details.
