Out in Harbison Canyon, a guy flagged me down to meet him in his driveway off one of those quiet canyon roads. He had a 2019 Kia Niro and one working key. His wife had the other one, and somewhere between the grocery run and loading up the garage, it had gone missing. Not lost-forever missing, just somewhere-in-the-house missing, which meant he had no idea when it would turn up.
He'd already called the Kia dealer in the area. The service advisor told him they'd need to order the fob first, and the earliest appointment to get everything done was a couple weeks out. That was before anyone mentioned towing, which he would have needed if the one key he still had ever stopped working.
I pulled up, verified the vehicle, and got to work at the OBD port. The 2019 Niro uses a PIN-based immobilizer system, and with the right equipment I can read what I need directly from the vehicle to register a new key. No guessing, no calling a hotline. The fob I brought matched the factory spec - four buttons, CR2032, correct blade profile for the door cylinder. Cut it, programmed it, walked through every button, checked both door handles, confirmed the push-button start read the new fob cleanly.
Took about 25 minutes. He had two working keys again before I backed out of the driveway.
The dealer route would have taken weeks and cost him a good chunk more, plus a tow fee if anything had gone sideways with that one remaining key. He kept mentioning that. I didn't need to.
