There is a parking area just off the main stretch in Del Mar Village where the meters run out fast and nobody wants to be standing around. That is exactly where I met a guy with a 2021 Kia Niro and a fob that had decided today was the day to stop cooperating.
He had already tried the obvious thing. Fresh CR2032 from the gas station, seated himself, and the dash still threw a key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to the door. The push-button start worked fine once he held the fob right against it, but the passive entry was completely dead. He figured he needed a new fob, had already called the dealer, and was waiting on a callback that he said probably meant towing it in and leaving it for two days.
I pulled up, popped the fob open right on my work surface, and looked at the battery contacts. The cell he had put in was fine. The contacts themselves had a faint film on them - not corrosion exactly, just the kind of residue that builds up when a fob gets handled constantly, sits in a pocket with change, that kind of thing. Cleaned the contact points, reseated the battery with actual pressure, and snapped the case back together.
Passive entry came right back. Walked both doors, tested all five buttons, confirmed the start button picked up the fob from normal range without having to hold it against the column. The whole thing took about twelve minutes.
He asked if I still needed to program anything. I told him no - the fob was already registered to the car, it just needed a clean connection to do its job. He had been ready to pay dealer rates for a replacement fob and a programming appointment. He did not have to.
