There is a small parking area off Del Mar Heights Road that birdwatchers use when they head down toward the trails near the bluffs. A guy called me from there on a weekday afternoon. His 2000 Mazda B-Series pickup was sitting in the gravel lot and his only key was gone. He had been on the trail for about two hours, retraced the whole thing, checked with a ranger, nothing. He figured his day was done and was already pricing a tow to the dealer.

I cut a new key blade to the truck using the door lock as my reference, then handled the transponder side with my programmer through the OBD port. The underlying architecture on these is shared with the Ford Ranger of the same era, so the process was clean and familiar. Once the key was done, I programmed the replacement 3-button fob and tested every function in the lot before I packed up.
He drove out on his own. The dealer quote he had looked up on his phone while waiting was not close to what he paid me. He mentioned it, I nodded, and that was about it.
