1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: I don't have my original key. How do you figure out what key to cut?

Two ways. First option: the key code is often stamped on the original lock cylinder or can be pulled from the door lock using a decoder. Second option: we pick and decode the lock directly on site. For a 1996 Cutlass, the lock cylinders are mature enough that decoding is usually quick and clean. Either path gets us to an accurate cut without needing the original key in hand. No guessing, no "try this and see."

Q: I lost all my keys. Can you still make a new one without towing the car anywhere?

Yes, and this is genuinely one of the simpler all-keys-lost situations we run. The 1996 Cutlass is a metal key vehicle. We come to your car in Fallbrook or Bonsall, decode the lock cylinder on site, cut a new key, and you're done. No OBD programming, no dealer trip, no tow. The whole job typically wraps in under thirty minutes depending on lock condition.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition. Is the key worn out or is something wrong with the cylinder?

At this age, it's usually both working against each other at the same time. A worn key cuts slightly off-spec and puts uneven pressure on the tumblers, which accelerates wear inside the cylinder. Then the cylinder starts sticking, which makes people force the key, which wears it faster. Before assuming the cylinder needs replacing, get a fresh key cut directly from the lock decode.

Q: Can a locksmith cut a key for a 1996 Cutlass on the spot, or do I need to go to a dealer?

A locksmith can handle this completely. The dealer isn't really the move for a car this age anyway. A mobile locksmith comes to you, decodes the lock, and cuts the key on site. I've done this job in driveways all around Fallbrook and Bonsall. No appointment, no leaving your car somewhere, and you pay a fraction of what a dealer would ask even if they were willing to take the job.

1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone out in Bonsall, just off the Fallbrook side. The key had snapped off in the door lock. Not the ignition, the door. They'd been getting in through the passenger side for two weeks before they finally called.

When I pulled up, I could see the broken tip still sitting in the lock cylinder. Standard extraction job. Got the tip out clean, then used the lock to decode the correct cut before touching the key machine. That's the move on a car this age: read the lock directly rather than guessing from a worn spare.

Cut the new key, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Both worked smooth on the first try. The owner mentioned they'd called around and one shop said they'd have to order a blank and it'd be a few days. I had the blank on the van.

Done in the driveway, maybe thirty minutes including the extraction. That was it.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass key fob use a CR2032 battery?▼

There is no fob on this one. The 1996 Cutlass uses a plain metal key, full stop. No remote, no battery, no fob to replace or reprogram. If you saw a CR2032 reference somewhere tied to this vehicle, it belongs to a different trim or model year. What you need is simply a replacement key cut to your car.
