1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is involved in replacing a lost key for this car?

It's a cutting job. We either pull the key code on record for your VIN or decode one of your lock cylinders directly, then cut a replacement key blade to match. No programming, no OBD connection, no computer work. You can be down to zero keys on this car and the process is the same.

Q: What if my key broke off inside the ignition?

Happens more than people expect, especially on cars this age where the key has been used for years. We extract the broken piece first, then inspect the cylinder. A snapped key can damage the internal wafers if it breaks under pressure or gets forced, and a bent wafer means the next key will stick or won't turn all the way. We check that on site and tell you straight whether the cylinder is still good or needs work.

Q: Can I get a replacement key made from the VIN, or does someone have to look at the car in person?

Both methods work. Key codes for GM vehicles from this era are documented and can often be retrieved by VIN through a locksmith's industry database, which means we may be able to cut your key before we even touch the car. If the code isn't on record or there's any question about whether the locks have been changed, we decode directly from the cylinder. Either way, the job happens at your location in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, not at a shop.

Q: My ignition is starting to feel stiff and the key is getting hard to turn. Is the cylinder worn out?

On a car this age, stiff ignitions are common. The wafers inside the cylinder wear over time, and a worn key makes it worse because the cuts get rounded down and stop lifting the wafers cleanly. Sometimes a freshly cut key on a decoded cylinder solves it because the new key fits precisely again. If the cylinder itself is too far gone, we can rekey or replace it on site.

1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy over in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, right off San Elijo Avenue. He'd bought the Cutlass used, no keys included, figured the seller would "mail them later." They didn't.

He'd been borrowing his neighbor's truck for two weeks by the time he called me. Wasn't in a hurry about it, just tired of asking.

I pulled up, decoded the lock cylinder right at the door, and cut a replacement key on the spot. Took maybe fifteen minutes from parking my van to handing him a working key. He turned it over in his hand a couple times like he was waiting for something else to happen.

There wasn't anything else. It's a metal key. It either fits the lock or it doesn't, and this one fit.

He mentioned the dealer told him they'd need the VIN, proof of ownership, and a few days to order the key blank. I just cut it in his driveway. He said he'd expected the whole thing to cost way more than it did.

Oldsmobile Cutlass Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass key have any buttons or a remote?▼

No. The 1998 Cutlass uses a plain metal key with no remote, no fob, and no buttons. Lock and unlock the doors with the key in the door cylinder. That's the whole system. If someone sold you the car with a separate key fob, that's an aftermarket add-on, not factory equipment. The replacement we make is a metal key cut to your vehicle, nothing more.
