When you turn the ignition, the car reads the transponder chip through a ring antenna around the ignition cylinder. If the chip isn't there, isn't programmed, or isn't responding, the immobilizer cuts the engine.

The fob communicates separately with the body electronics to handle lock, unlock, and panic -- that's a radio frequency signal, completely independent of what's happening at the ignition.

When all keys are lost, I clear the old key data through the OBD port so no previous key can start the vehicle, then enroll the new transponder. That's the part that requires proper diagnostic equipment. The fob pairing follows right after.

What happens if a key broke off inside the ignition?

First thing I do is extract the broken piece without making the damage worse. Once it's out, I inspect the cylinder. On a 2002 VUE the ignition cylinder internals can take a beating from a broken key -- the wafers inside can shift or bend, which causes the cylinder to stick or bind even after the key is removed.

If the cylinder is damaged, I'll tell you on site before any other work continues. In some cases extraction and a new key is all you need. In others, the cylinder itself needs to be replaced. I handle both. The diagnosis happens right there at your car before you're committed to anything more than the service call.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2002 VUE. Can I program it myself?

It does not always work on the first try, and it only covers the fob's lock/unlock/panic functions.

The transponder chip in the key blade is a different story. That side requires OBD programming equipment to enroll. If you bought a pre-cut key with a transponder and tried an ignition-cycle trick hoping it would just learn -- it won't. The immobilizer on this car doesn't self-learn a new chip without a tool initiating the process.

Bottom line: if the fob you bought carries the correct factory FCC ID for this vehicle, the remote side might be DIY-able if you find the right sequence and your car cooperates. The transponder side is not.

My 2002 VUE cranks fine but stalls immediately after. The security light is on. Is that the key?

That pattern -- cranks, fires briefly, then stalls with the security light illuminated -- is the immobilizer doing its job. It recognized a crank attempt but didn't receive a valid transponder signal, so it cut fuel or spark right after startup.

Most common causes on a car this age: the transponder chip in the key head has failed, the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder has a break in it, or a replacement key was cut correctly but never programmed to this specific vehicle.

Worth checking -- try your other key if you have one. If the second key starts and holds, the first key's chip is the problem. If neither key works, the antenna ring or the immobilizer module itself is where I'd look next. I diagnose that on site.
