2004 Saturn VUE
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More, every time, on every vehicle. When you have a working key, adding a spare is quick. When all keys are gone, the immobilizer needs a full reset and the new keys have to be registered from scratch. On a 2004 VUE that means a longer job and more work on the programming side. The gap between spare and all-keys-lost can be significant. Best move: get a spare made now, while you still have a working key in hand.

Q: Do aftermarket remotes actually work on a 2004 Saturn VUE, or should I stick with OEM?

Aftermarket fobs for this vehicle are widely available online and some of them do work fine once programmed. The risk is quality control. Shell fit, button feel, and internal component consistency vary a lot across cheap aftermarket units. I've seen them come in with contacts that don't seat right or circuitry that programs but loses sync quickly. The fobs I use are OEM-spec, verified compatible with the factory FCC ID for this year and model.

Q: My 2004 VUE remote stopped working after the car battery died. Do I need a new fob?

Probably not. This is one of the most common complaints on early-2000s GM vehicles. When the car battery goes completely dead and gets jumped or replaced, the vehicle security system can lose its memory of the paired remotes. The fob itself is usually fine. It just needs to be re-enrolled to the vehicle. In most cases this is a reprogramming job, not a replacement.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 2004 Saturn VUE myself at home?

There is an onboard relearn sequence for this vehicle that some owners have had luck with, but it requires a currently working programmed key to initiate. If you already have one working fob or key and just want to add a second remote, it may be worth researching that procedure. If you have no working fob at all, the onboard sequence won't get you there. That situation needs someone with the right programming tool and access through the OBD port.

2004 Saturn VUE Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a resident over at Coronado Shores, one of the condo towers right on the beach. She had a 2004 Saturn VUE sitting in the parking structure and the remote had stopped working entirely. Lock button, unlock button, nothing. She had already swapped the CR2032 herself, which I appreciated because it ruled out the easy fix before I even showed up.

When I got there, I tested the fob first. The signal was transmitting, so the remote itself was alive. The issue was that it had dropped out of the vehicle's memory, which happens on these early-2000s GM systems when the car battery gets low or dies and comes back. The fob and the car basically forget each other.

The good news on the 2004 VUE is that the remote can be reprogrammed without a lot of drama. I went through the relearn procedure using the ignition and got the fob back in sync with the vehicle. Tested lock, unlock, and the trunk release. All three buttons working.

She was back inside in under thirty minutes. She mentioned she had called the dealer first and they told her to bring it in. No timeline, just "bring it in." That works fine if you have a second car or a free afternoon. She had neither.

Saturn VUE Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a remote for my 2004 Saturn VUE?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before the dealer. The dealer will have you bring the vehicle in, wait on parts, and pay a separate labor charge on top. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Coronado or Coronado Shores, cut the key if needed, program the fob on site, and you get a tested and working replacement before I leave. No towing, no appointment wait, no splitting the bill between a parts counter and a service bay.
