How many buttons does the 2005 Saturn VUE remote have?

Three buttons. On this fob you're looking at lock, unlock, and a third for the rear -- on the VUE that's the liftgate release. When I replace and program the remote, I test all three before I leave. What does a remote key actually do, and why does programming matter?

The 2005 VUE remote is doing two jobs at once. The blade cuts the ignition and operates the door locks mechanically. Inside the fob head, the transponder chip talks to the immobilizer when you turn the key -- no valid signal, no start. Separately, the remote buttons send a wireless signal to the body control module to handle lock, unlock, and liftgate functions.

Programming matters because both of those electronic pieces need to be introduced to your specific vehicle. A blank key with no programming will turn in the ignition but the car won't fire. The remote buttons won't work either. The programming procedure tells the vehicle to recognize that transponder and that remote, and it also erases any previously registered keys -- which is exactly what you want if your old keys are lost or stolen.

Why does the dealer charge so much more for a replacement key on a 2005 Saturn VUE?

A few layers to it. GM dealerships billing for a VUE key are going through their parts counter markup plus a flat labor rate from the service department, and if you don't have a working key to get the car there, they expect you to tow it in. That tow adds cost before they've even touched a thing. Then there's the wait -- parts availability on a vehicle this age at a GM dealer is not always same-day.

I bought a replacement fob online for my 2005 VUE. Can I program it myself at home?

The remote button side of this fob has an onboard programming procedure that some owners have done themselves -- it involves a specific sequence with the door lock and ignition that puts the car into programming mode. That part is documented and some people pull it off fine.

The transponder side is a different story. That requires a programmer connected to the OBD port. You can't do it with an ignition sequence. So if you bought a pre-cut key online hoping to handle everything yourself, you'll likely get the remote buttons working but the car still won't start until the transponder is properly registered. That's where I come in.

My 2005 VUE starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Accepted Answer

Start with the CR2032 battery. That's the most common reason the remote side quits while the car still starts -- the transponder needs less power than the radio transmitter, so a dying battery will knock out the buttons before it affects the ignition. Pop the battery, put a fresh CR2032 in, and retest range at a normal distance.

If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced. Since the car starts, you at least know the transponder is good, which narrows the problem down to the remote transmitter side. That's a much simpler fix than a full all-keys-lost situation.
