Over in the Seacoast neighborhood of Imperial Beach, I got a call from a guy who does handyman work out of his Ascent. Tools in the back, runs all day, the SUV is basically his office.
He had a smart key that another locksmith had programmed about a week before I showed up. It worked fine the first few days. Then it started dropping out. Push-to-start would flash a key-not-detected warning by late afternoon, same vehicle that had started clean that same morning.
He figured it was something electrical. Intermittent faults feel like gremlins, and gremlins feel like wiring.
I pulled up the key data and looked at what had been programmed. The chip generation in that key was not a match for what the Ascent's immobilizer expects. Tested it twice with the vehicle locked and relocked. He also had no idea the emergency blade was tucked inside the fob. Showed him how to pop it out. He said that was the most useful thing he'd learned about the car.
The dealer had quoted him a full key replacement appointment with a multiday wait for parts. He saved a good chunk coming to me, and it was done in the parking lot in under an hour.
