Yes, and this is one of the cleaner fixes in the smart key world. The electronics inside your fob, the board that holds all your programming, transfers directly into a new shell. Your pairing to the vehicle stays untouched because you are not swapping the board, just the housing around it. The emergency blade moves over too.

The main thing to watch with aftermarket shells is clip and button quality. Cheap housings use thin plastic that cracks faster than the original, and the button membranes can feel mushy right out of the package. I use shells I've tested, not whatever shows up cheapest on a parts site.

If the board itself is damaged, that's a different conversation. But a cracked housing with working internals is a quick on-site job.

What actually is a smart key and how is it different from a regular car key?

Your 2024 Ascent fob is a self-contained unit with a programmed transponder inside and four buttons for remote functions. There is also a mechanical blade folded into the body for physical door access when the battery goes flat.

The key difference from older setups is that the vehicle security system only recognizes fobs that have been enrolled to that specific vehicle. A brand-new fob right out of the box will not start your Ascent. It has to be paired through diagnostic equipment first. That is why you cannot just order one online and be done with it.

Older Subaru models used a separate blade key for ignition and a standalone remote for locking. The Ascent combines all of that, plus the transponder, into one fob.

My Ascent is showing a key-not-detected warning. What's the first thing I should do?

Hold the fob directly against the start button and press. Not near it. Against it. This is the built-in backup: the vehicle can read the transponder through direct contact even when the fob battery is completely dead. If the car starts that way, you just need a CR2032.

If contact-start does not work, the problem is less likely the battery and more likely the fob or the vehicle side. There are documented patterns in Subaru forums where the key-not-detected warning appears with no obvious trigger, the car sits for ten or fifteen minutes, and then it clears on its own. That points toward an intermittent communication issue, not a dead fob. If it keeps coming back, that needs diagnostic attention, not a new battery.

One more thing: if you have a phone case with a heavy magnet or a magnetic wallet sitting right next to the fob in your pocket, that can cause interference. It does not destroy the programming, but it can suppress the signal enough to trigger the warning.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my Ascent, or is there more to it?

I can program it, but there are a couple of things to check before I show up. The fob has to be the correct one for your vehicle. A fob from a different Subaru model or a different market version may not pair correctly even if it looks identical. Verify the factory FCC ID on your current fob matches what you purchased.

Beyond that, yes, adding a fob to the 2024 Ascent requires diagnostic equipment connected to the OBD port. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for this system. I bring the tools to do it on-site in Casa de Oro, so you are not driving anywhere or waiting at a dealer.

If I lose both keys, is that a harder job or can you still handle it?

All-keys-lost is handled on-site. It takes longer than adding a key because the security system has to go through a full reset before new fobs can be enrolled. That process has a timed sequence built in, so the job is not rushed. When it is done, the old missing fobs are erased and can no longer start the vehicle. You get clean, working keys and nothing floating out there that could be used against you.

Expect the job to run longer than a standard spare-key add. I do not quote time in isolation because conditions vary, but I factor that into scheduling when you call.
