Do you need to tow your 2008 Volvo C30 to the dealer? For most Volvos from the mid-2000s through about 2020, no. I handle all-keys-lost right at the car.
A customer at home in Imperial Beach had his only fob stop working at 2am. His C30 was in the driveway with push-to-start and no key the car would recognize. He assumed a tow was the only path and started pricing flatbed companies for the morning. I told him to stay put and that I'd come to him.
I connected my Smart Pro to the OBD port and worked through the Volvo key learning procedure. His Remote Head Key, FCC ID KR55WK49250, was a 5-button smart key that I programmed in his driveway at 2:30 in the morning. He seemed pretty surprised the whole thing could happen at that hour.
His total was about $185. The dealer would have been $395 plus a tow and a wait until business hours. There are some very new Volvo platforms that require VIDA subscriptions and dealer-level software for AKL, and those do go to the dealer. I'll tell you that up front before any charges. But for the majority of Volvos currently on the road, I do all-keys-lost on-site regularly.
