I was coming off a job near the canyon roads out in Harbison Canyon when the call came in. C30 owner, one key left, remote had stopped locking and unlocking the doors. The key still turned and the car still started, but she was nervous about driving around El Cajon with a half-functioning key as her only backup.
She had her VIN ready when I pulled up, which I appreciated. I already had a good idea of what I was working with just from the year and model. The C30 runs its key data through the central electronics module, and with a working key still in hand, I could go straight to the OBD port without any module removal.
I tested the original fob first. Remote functions were dead. Transponder side was healthy. That told me right away the issue was the remote antenna and battery circuit, not the immobilizer enrollment. I checked the battery compartment on her old fob and found exactly what I expected: the CR2450 had leaked just enough to leave a film on the positive contact. The key wasn't failing because the programming was lost. It was failing because a battery that old had quietly gone bad from the inside.
I replaced the battery and cleaned the contacts on the original, which brought the remote functions back. Then I programmed a new blank as a proper spare so she had two working keys leaving the job. The whole visit was about 25 minutes. She mentioned she'd called the dealer earlier in the week and was told to bring it in and leave it for the day.
That's the part that always gets me. Leaving your only car at a dealership for the day, in El Cajon, for a key job I can do in your driveway before lunch.
