When a 2008 Chevrolet HHR key is done wrong, the car tells you about it. You get a "service theft deterrent" message on the dash. The engine cranks but cuts fuel after two seconds. The remote locks but won't unlock. Or worst case, the fob programs initially but the immobilizer rejects it after a few drive cycles and you're stranded again.
A customer at the coin laundry in Oxnard had a key made by another locksmith for her HHR that triggered "service theft deterrent" after about a week. Her fob also had a weak battery contributing to intermittent detection failure. I swapped that too so she wasn't chasing two problems at once.
The replacement I made has been working for months and cost her 99. Dealer would have charged 211. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip inside it.
