2010 Chevrolet HHR
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why can't I just get it cut at the hardware store?

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn the key, a coil around the ignition cylinder reads that chip. If the signal isn't recognized, the vehicle security system blocks the engine from running even if the blade is cut perfectly. A hardware store can copy the blade, but they can't program the chip. You'd have a key that turns the ignition but the car won't start.

Q: My Chevrolet is showing a theft deterrent warning. What does that mean and what do I do?

That warning means the vehicle security system didn't recognize the key during startup. The engine may crank and not fire, or it may not crank at all. First thing: try your spare if you have one. If the spare works and the primary doesn't, the chip in your main key is likely failing or the key head cracked and shifted the chip.

Q: I bought a replacement key online. Can you just program it to my HHR?

Maybe. The key has to be the correct type for the 2010 HHR, meaning it needs the right transponder chip already inside the head. A lot of keys sold online are blank shells with no chip, or they have the wrong chip entirely. If that's what you've got, programming won't work because there's nothing valid to register. If you can confirm it's the correct key type for this vehicle, I can cut the blade and run the programming on site.

Q: Can I program a second key myself at home without any tools?

Not on the 2010 HHR transponder system. There's no owner-accessible add-a-key sequence for this vehicle the way there was on some earlier GM models. Programming requires a tool that communicates through the OBD port. That's true whether you're adding a spare or doing an all-keys-lost situation.

2010 Chevrolet HHR Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the CVS on Telegraph in Midtown Ventura when she walked up and asked if I was the locksmith she'd called. She had her phone out with my license number already pulled up on the BSIS website. Said she'd been burned before by someone who handed her a receipt with nothing on it, and she wasn't doing that again.

Her 2010 HHR had one working key and she wanted a spare before that one gave out. Smart thinking on her part. She'd already been told by a shop that they couldn't cut it on site and she'd have to go to the dealer or wait days for an order.

I cut the key blade to her vehicle right there in the parking lot and ran the transponder programming on site. The whole job took under thirty minutes. She watched the security light do its thing on the dash and then clear, which is the moment you know the chip registered and the car accepted it.

She tested it herself, twice, before I packed anything up. Turned it over, pulled it out, tried again. When you hand someone a second key they've been putting off for two years, they always test it more than once. I don't blame them.

The dealer had quoted her a wait plus a trip across town. She saved a solid chunk and never left her neighborhood to get it done.

Chevrolet HHR Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My key shell is cracking. Can you swap it without reprogramming the whole key?▼

Yes, and it's one of the cleaner fixes on this vehicle. The transponder chip inside the key head is a passive component, no battery, no circuit board the way a fob has one. On the HHR, the chip sits inside the plastic key head, and a careful transfer into a new matching shell keeps the programmed chip intact. No relearn needed if the chip isn't disturbed.
