A customer near Lemon Grove Plaza in Oxnard flagged me down about her 2008 HHR. Another locksmith had cut her a key a few weeks back. It worked at first. Then "Service Theft Deterrent System" started showing up on the dash, sometimes in the morning, sometimes after the car sat for a few hours at work. I pulled the old key apart on the spot. The other locksmith had used a generic ID46 chip that was close but not the right variant for GM's PK3+ system. These things pass the initial learn cycle just fine. The BCM accepts them. But after a handful of cold starts, the deeper rolling validation fails and the module flags the key as unauthorized. That is how you get a key that works for a week and then ghosts you.
I programmed a new key on the correct Megamos crypto ID46 matched to her BCM using my VVDI2, cut it on a B111-PT blank, and ran the PK3+ security relearn right there in the parking lot. Three 10-minute ignition cycles, 30 minutes of waiting while we talked about nothing in particular.
That key is still starting her HHR months later. No dash warnings, no intermittent stalls, no drama.
