2008 Chevrolet HHR
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I have to tow my HHR to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. Dealers will tell you to tow it in because that's their process. It isn't the only one. I come to the vehicle, whether that's a driveway in Five Points or a parking lot somewhere else in Oxnard. The programming equipment goes with me. All-keys-lost on an 2008 HHR does not require a dealer facility. It requires the right tools and knowing the procedure for this generation of GM immobilizer.

Q: How long does a replacement key job take on a 2008 HHR?

If you have one working key, adding a spare is the faster job. The transponder gets programmed and you're done in roughly 15 to 20 minutes on site. All-keys-lost takes longer because the immobilizer relearn has a timed security phase built in. On this generation of GM vehicle, that adds mandatory wait time to the process. Figure 30 to 45 minutes total from the time I arrive to the time you drive away.

Q: My HHR cranks but shuts off immediately. Could this be a key problem?

Yes, and it's one of the more common ways a transponder problem shows up. The engine catches for a second or two, then fuel cuts and it dies. The car cranks fine because cranking is mechanical. The immobilizer controls fuel and ignition authorization, so if it doesn't read a valid transponder signal, it lets you crank all day and still won't run.

Q: Can I get a copy of my HHR key made at a hardware store?

They can cut the blade. They cannot program the chip. A hardware store copy will fit the ignition and turn it, but the car won't run because the transponder inside the new key hasn't been matched to your vehicle. You'd get the same crank-and-die result as a completely wrong key. The blade cut and the chip programming are two separate steps, and you need both done correctly.

2008 Chevrolet HHR Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

There's a coin laundry over on Saviers Road that feeds into the Five Points area of Oxnard. A woman came out of there, arms full, and her HHR just sat there cranking and dying.

She'd had a key made by someone else about a week before. It worked fine at first. Then it started doing this thing where the engine would catch for a second and cut out. By the time she called me, it wasn't starting at all. She figured the car had developed an electrical problem. Cars do that. You convince yourself it's something big.

I asked her when it started and she told me about the new key. That pointed me straight at the transponder. The key she had looked correct. Right profile, fit the ignition, turned fine. But the chip inside it wasn't reading the way this car's immobilizer expected. Some chips will pass an initial learn cycle and fail deeper verification over the next several start attempts. That's exactly what happened here. First few starts were fine. Then the system caught on and started shutting fuel.

I programmed a new key on site with the correct transponder matched to her vehicle. Confirmed it started clean, twice, before I packed up. The old key got tossed.

The whole job was done in the parking lot. She didn't need a tow, didn't need a dealer appointment, didn't need to wait three days for parts. What she needed was the right chip the first time.

Chevrolet HHR Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys for my 2008 HHR. Can you make a new one from scratch?▼

Yes, all-keys-lost on the 2008 HHR is a standard job. Because this is a transponder turn-key system, we cut a new key blade to your vehicle and program the transponder chip to your car's immobilizer using professional equipment. There's a security relearn sequence involved when no working key is present, but it doesn't require a tow or a dealer. We handle it on site, wherever the car is parked.
