Got a call from a woman near the Rose Shopping Center in Oxnard. Her 2009 HHR would crank but cut out after about two seconds, every time. She had already had it towed once and was told the ignition was bad.
When I got there, the security light on the dash was on solid. Classic Passlock III rejection. The car was reading the key, turning over, then the body control module would kill the fuel injectors because the Hall-effect sensor in the lock cylinder was not getting the right resistance signal.
I plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port and pulled the BCM. On these HHRs the body control module is part number 20763454 or similar depending on build date, and it stores the Passlock sensor data. I ran a security relearn, which on GM Passlock means a timed sequence: ignition on, wait for the security light to go off after about ten minutes, cycle off, repeat two more times. Three ten-minute cycles. It is not fast, and there is no shortcut.
After the relearn completed, I tested three cold starts back to back. Then I waited five minutes and started it again. She stood there watching, arms crossed, like the car was going to pull the same stunt.
It did not. The security light flickered on ignition and went out like it should. She told me she had been dealing with this for two weeks and almost sold the car.
Whole job done on site, for way less than the dealer wanted just to look at it.
