2009 Chevrolet HHR
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key from my HHR so it can't start the car anymore?

Yes. The all-keys-lost procedure on these GM vehicles clears every previously enrolled key from the system and registers only the keys present during that session. A key that went missing last week won't start the car after that reset. One thing worth noting on the 2009 HHR: it uses a blade key, so if the lost key also fits the door lock cylinder, you may want the locks rekeyed as a separate step.

Q: Does my 2009 HHR have a hidden emergency blade inside a fob?

No. The 2009 HHR uses a transponder key, which is a single metal key that turns in the ignition and the door lock directly. There is no fob housing, no flip mechanism, no hidden blade to pop out. The key is the blade. Replacement means cutting a new key to the vehicle and running the immobilizer relearn so it starts the car. That's the whole job.

Q: My 2009 HHR cranks but won't start, and the security light is on. Is this a key programming problem?

Maybe, but don't assume the key is bad before you check the security light behavior. On this generation of GM vehicle, the immobilizer has a built-in timer that engages when it detects an issue with the key signal. You'll see the security light stay solid or flash, and the car will crank without firing. The right move is to leave the key in the "on" position and wait for the security light to go out on its own.

Q: I bought a replacement key online for my 2009 HHR. Will it work if I just cut it?

Cutting it gets you into the door. It won't start the car. The transponder chip inside the key has to be enrolled to the immobilizer through the OBD port, and that step requires diagnostic equipment. There's no ignition-turn sequence or DIY relearn trick that works on this system. So if you've already got the key cut and you're wondering why the car cranks but doesn't fire, that's why.

2009 Chevrolet HHR Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy out in El Rio, Oxnard. His 2009 HHR key had snapped off at the bow, the part you grip. Blade was fine, still turning the lock, but the head was gone and he'd been starting it with needle-nose pliers for two days. His wife was not thrilled about the pliers situation.

I pulled up to the driveway with everything I needed. Decoded the existing lock cylinder, cut a fresh key blade to match the vehicle, connected to the OBD port, read the security PIN, and ran the key learn sequence through the immobilizer. The system on these older HHRs has a timed security relearn built in, so you sit and wait through it. There's no shortcut. I tested the new key three times in a row, cold starts, waited a full minute between each one to confirm there was nothing intermittent going on.

The whole thing was done in his driveway. He asked what the dealer would have charged and I told him to call and ask. He did, right there on the spot, got a number that made him laugh a little.

The pliers went in the trash.

Chevrolet HHR Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2009 HHR?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who works on older GM vehicles. Dealers will often quote you a tow plus a programming fee plus a cutting fee, and those line items add up fast before you've even seen the key. On an all-keys-lost job for this generation of HHR, I come to the vehicle, decode or trace the blade, cut a new key, read the security PIN through the OBD port, and run the immobilizer relearn on-site. No tow.
