La Conchita sits right on PCH between Ventura and nowhere, and that stretch of coast has almost no shade and zero cell signal in spots. When a guy called me from the parking area near the water, he was already sunburned and running low on patience.
He had driven his 2011 HHR down from Ventura, tucked it in, and somewhere between locking up and getting back, the key was gone. Not misplaced in a bag. Gone. He said he retraced everything twice. He was standing next to a locked car in full afternoon sun with no way in and no way to start it even if he got the door open.
I told him I could be there that afternoon and have him on the road the same day.
When I got there I picked the door open and decoded the wafer positions right off the lock cylinder so the blade would be exact. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure. The security system clears every previously registered key and then runs a timed relearn before it will accept a new one. You cannot skip that wait. Once it finished, I cut and programmed a fresh transponder key and tested the start twice. Then I cut him a spare on the spot and programmed that one too, because a guy who just lost his only key in a beach lot is a guy who needs a backup before he leaves.
Total time was about 45 minutes. He drove home with two working keys. The dealer would have required a tow since the car was in a beach lot with no key, plus their own labor and wait time. He saved a good chunk and skipped all of that.
