2011 Chevrolet HHR
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith cheaper than going to the Chevrolet dealer for a key?

On a vehicle like the 2011 HHR, almost always. Dealers charge separately for parts, cutting, and programming labor. When you add those together, the total is typically a significant amount more than what a qualified mobile locksmith charges for the complete job. The gap gets wider if you factor in towing, because if you have no working key, the car is not getting to the dealer on its own.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming, or are those separate charges?

Everything is included. The key blank, cutting the blade to your specific vehicle, programming the transponder to the immobilizer, running the security relearn cycle, and testing the start before I leave. No hidden line items. Dealers routinely break this into three or four separate charges, and that is where the total balloons. With us it is one price for a complete, tested, working key.

Q: My 2011 HHR turns over but immediately stalls after I had work done on the car. Could it be a key programming issue?

This is one of the more common complaints on HHR forums after a battery replacement or any job that touched the electrical system. The immobilizer on these cars can drop the transponder registration if power was interrupted in a specific way during certain repair procedures. The symptom is exactly what you described: the engine cranks and fires, then dies within a second or two. The car is not recognizing the key as valid for long enough to keep running.

Q: Can I buy a key blank online and have you program it to my 2011 HHR?

Yes, but with a caveat. The blank has to be compatible with the HHR's transponder system, and not every aftermarket blank sold online actually is, even when the listing claims it fits. I have seen people show up with blanks that look identical but the chip inside is the wrong type and will not register no matter what tool you use.

2011 Chevrolet HHR Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

La Conchita sits right on PCH between Ventura and nowhere, and that stretch of coast has almost no shade and zero cell signal in spots. When a guy called me from the parking area near the water, he was already sunburned and running low on patience.

He had driven his 2011 HHR down from Ventura, tucked it in, and somewhere between locking up and getting back, the key was gone. Not misplaced in a bag. Gone. He said he retraced everything twice. He was standing next to a locked car in full afternoon sun with no way in and no way to start it even if he got the door open.

I told him I could be there that afternoon and have him on the road the same day.

When I got there I picked the door open and decoded the wafer positions right off the lock cylinder so the blade would be exact. Then I connected through the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure. The security system clears every previously registered key and then runs a timed relearn before it will accept a new one. You cannot skip that wait. Once it finished, I cut and programmed a fresh transponder key and tested the start twice. Then I cut him a spare on the spot and programmed that one too, because a guy who just lost his only key in a beach lot is a guy who needs a backup before he leaves.

Total time was about 45 minutes. He drove home with two working keys. The dealer would have required a tow since the car was in a beach lot with no key, plus their own labor and wait time. He saved a good chunk and skipped all of that.

Chevrolet HHR Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2011 Chevrolet HHR key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but it is way less than the dealer route. Chevrolet dealers typically break the job into separate line items: the key blank, the cutting fee, the programming labor, and sometimes a diagnostic charge on top. Those add up fast. With EZ Car Keyz, one price covers the blank, the cut, the programming, and the mobile service to your location in Ventura.
