A tenant at an apartment complex in Santa Barbara had exactly that story. Her only key to her 2005 Ford Excursion cracked at the blade pivot and snapped clean off when she tried to open the door. The remote head was in one hand and the blade was stuck in the lock. Zero working keys and a car she couldn't get into or start.
I used my VVDI2 to clone the transponder data from the broken key head, since the chip was still intact inside the cracked housing. That saved time because I didn't need to run a full all-keys-lost procedure. I extracted the broken blade fragment from the door lock, decoded the lock, and cut two fresh keys. Her fob, FCC ID , was a -button remote head key that I rebuilt into a new shell with the cloned chip inside. I showed her the chip from the cracked key so she could see it was still good.
She went from zero working keys to two in about 40 minutes. Total was around 95. A full all-keys-lost without the broken pieces would have cost more, and the dealer wanted 200 either way. If you still have the pieces, bring them. The chip data inside a cracked fob is often perfectly fine.
