A woman near Skofield Park in Santa Barbara flagged me down after church one Sunday. She said another locksmith had already come out for her 2000 Excursion and charged her full price for a key that never worked right. The engine would crank, catch for about two seconds, then die. Ford's PATS II on these trucks requires a specific parameter reset and a timed security countdown during an all-keys-lost procedure. If you rush it or skip the final write step, the system accepts the key data into temporary memory but never commits it. So the transponder looks learned, the engine fires, and then PATS pulls the fuel because permanent validation never happened.
I used my Lishi HU101 to verify the mechanical cut was correct. It was. Then I connected through the OBD-II port with my Autel IM608, cleared the failed key data the other tech left behind, and ran a clean PATS learn with the full security timer. Once the countdown finished, I confirmed the H72-PT was written permanently. Turned the key, engine held, theft light went out after the normal proving period.
She could see the confirmation right on the IM608 screen. No guessing, no "try it and see." The previous locksmith's mess was someone else's problem. I just made sure the truck actually started.
