A guy visiting a friend over in Stevens Park, Santa Barbara, flagged me down with a question before I even pulled my tools out. "Is an aftermarket key going to be as good as a dealer key?" He had a 2001 Ford Excursion, the 7.3L diesel, and wanted a real daily driver spare, not something he'd toss in a junk drawer.
Fair question.
OEM Ford keys come from Strattec, Ford's longtime supplier. They carry the Ford logo, the factory housing, and the brand tax. The aftermarket H72-PT blank I carry uses the same H75 blade profile, same Texas Instruments 4C glass transponder chip, same physical dimensions. Functionally identical once it's cut and programmed into PATS.
I cut the blade on the hood of his truck so he could watch the whole thing. Then I used his existing working key to run the two-key on-board programming sequence: key one in, cycle to run, back to off, swap to key two within fifteen seconds, cycle to run, wait for the security light to go solid. That confirmation means PATS accepted the new transponder ID into memory.
He turned it over in his hand a couple times, checking the weight and the blade. Then he just tried it. Engine fired, theft light went off on schedule, no hesitation. He kept looking at the dash like he expected a warning.
No Ford logo on the back of the key head. That's the only difference. And a good chunk still in his pocket compared to what the dealer wanted.
