Got a call around 9:30 at night from a guy near Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden in Santa Barbara. He had one key for his 2002 Excursion, and it was gone. Pockets, ground around the truck, nothing. He was already looking up tow trucks when he found my number.

He told me he'd owned the Excursion since 2009 and this was the first time he'd ever needed a spare. Thirteen years on one key.
Once the timer cleared, the truck started on the first turn. Theft light went out, engine held. I had him cycle it twice more just to be sure.
He drove home that night. A dealer would have needed a tow plus a next-day appointment, and the cost would have been a lot more. The VIN is the single most useful thing you can give me. It tells me the key type, the immobilizer generation, and what to bring.
