I got a call from a guy in Lakeside Proper on a Saturday evening. He was visiting from out of state for a wedding, staying at a hotel off the main strip, and somewhere between the ceremony and the reception his only ZDX fob had gone missing. The hotel concierge had already told him smart key replacement was a dealer job, and the nearest Acura dealer wouldn't be open until Monday morning. His flight home was Sunday afternoon.
The 2010 ZDX runs push-to-start. There's no ignition cylinder to fall back on, no way to just cut a metal key and drive away. The vehicle security system has to wirelessly detect a registered fob before the engine will wake up. With zero keys in the system, the car just sits there. It's not broken. It's waiting for credentials it no longer has.
I loaded up the van and drove to the hotel. All-keys-lost on this platform means the existing key data in the body control module has to be cleared before new fobs can be enrolled. I pulled the immobilizer data as a backup first, then ran the all-keys-lost sequence through the OBD port. New fob, programmed and verified on site.
He started the car in the hotel parking lot with about four hours to spare before the post-wedding dinner. The dealer would have had him stranded through the weekend and well past his return flight. He didn't say much when it started. Just sat there for a second, then nodded like he'd been holding his breath for three hours. Which he probably had.
All-keys-lost on a smart key vehicle isn't a dealer-exclusive job. It's a tools-and-training job. I have both.
