I was working out of Old Town National City on a Tuesday afternoon when I got a text from someone whose Envista was sitting in a parking lot off Highland Avenue. She had one working fob and wanted a spare before a work trip later that week. Smart move. All-keys-lost on a modern GM smart key system is a longer job than add-a-key, so having that one working fob in hand made a real difference.
She had the VIN ready when I got there, pulled off the dash placard and photographed in her registration, so I already knew what I was walking into before I parked behind her. The Envista is a newer platform, so it does require diagnostic equipment to register a second fob. There is no ignition-turn sequence, no button trick. You get in through the OBD port, access the body control module, and run the key-learning routine with the working fob present first, then the new one.
I ran the procedure, walked every button on the new fob, tested the touch-unlock on both door handles, and had her start the car with the new key a couple of times to confirm the immobilizer had accepted it. Clean job. She left with a tested spare and the peace of mind that if one fob disappears on the road, she is not stranded.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a wait time measured in days just to get the appointment. She did not end up going that route.
