2024 Genesis G70
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What does a smart key actually do differently from a regular key?

A smart key on the G70 does two separate things that are easy to mix up. The remote functions, door lock, unlock, trunk release, work by broadcasting a short-range wireless signal. That part runs off the fob battery and does not care whether the car is nearby or across the lot. The immobilizer side is different. When you press the start button, the vehicle security system sends a challenge to the fob and waits for the correct encrypted response back.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much more for a replacement key?

A few things stack up at the dealer. Parts department markup on the fob, service department labor rate, and the fact that you usually have to get the car to them first. If you are already down to zero working keys, that last part means a tow on top of everything else. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in San Marcos, bring the equipment and the fob, and do the programming on site. Same result.

Q: I have one key left for my 2024 G70. Should I get a spare now or wait until there is a problem?

Get the spare now. This comes up constantly with G70 owners and the answer is always the same. All-keys-lost on this vehicle is a workable job, but it takes longer, costs more, and requires the car to be accessible for the full enrollment process. If you are down to one fob and it fails, you are also dealing with a car that will not move until someone with the right diagnostic equipment shows up.

Q: My G70 fob works fine up close but the range has gotten really short. Is the fob dying?

Usually that is the CR2450 going low before it goes dead. These fobs tend to lose range noticeably before the battery fails completely, so short range is often the first real warning sign. Swap the battery with a fresh CR2450 specifically, seat it cleanly against both contacts, and retest. If range comes back, you had a weak cell.

2024 Genesis G70 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Over in the CSUSM Area of San Marcos, I got a call from someone whose G70 had been sitting in a covered parking structure since the night before. The fob had been acting up for about a week, range getting shorter, then one morning the car just would not acknowledge it at all. No response from the push-to-start, key-not-detected warning on the cluster, nothing.

He had already called the Genesis dealer. They quoted him a wait for parts and told him to arrange transport. He found me before he arranged anything.

When I got there, I pulled the fob apart first. The CR2450 inside was original, and the contact had a slight oxide film on it. I cleaned it, seated a fresh CR2450, and tested. The car woke right up. That was the whole story for the fob itself.

But while I was there, he mentioned he only had the one key. That is the real risk with the G70. All-keys-lost on this platform requires diagnostic equipment and a timed enrollment process through the OBD port. It is not a dealer-only job, but it is not a quick ignition-turn sequence either. I walked him through getting a spare made while I was already on site, same visit, so he would not be in that situation down the road.

He was back inside with two working keys before lunch. The dealer detour never happened.

Genesis G70 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2024 Genesis G70 smart key have?▼

Five buttons. The fob handles lock, unlock, and additional functions that vary slightly depending on your trim and what options are active on your vehicle. When I program a replacement on site, I run through every button and confirm each one is responding correctly before I pack up. A key that locks but does not release the trunk is not a finished job.
