2023 Genesis Gv60
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What actually happens when the smart key stops communicating with the GV60?

The car's security system won't authorize the engine to run without confirming the fob's identity. That handshake happens wirelessly before you ever touch the start button. If it fails, you'll usually see a key-not-detected warning on the cluster. The door handles may also stop responding to touch since the passive entry system relies on the same signal. The vehicle isn't broken. It's doing exactly what it's designed to do when it can't verify the key.

Q: Do I need to be there the whole time while you work?

Just the start and the finish. I verify your ID and registration before I touch the car. After that you can go back inside. When the key is ready I'll get you to test it yourself so you're confident it's working before I pack up and leave.

Q: I bought a replacement GV60 fob online. Can you just program it for me?

Maybe. It depends on where it came from and whether it's a genuine part. The GV60 fob pairing requires professional diagnostic equipment connected to the vehicle. There's no onboard sequence, no button trick, no ignition cycling that registers a new smart key on this system. That part is non-negotiable regardless of where the fob came from. What does matter is the fob itself. Aftermarket units for this vehicle are hit or miss.

Q: Can the GV60's fingerprint scanner on the door replace the fob entirely if I lose my key?

No. The fingerprint scanner on the B-pillar is a convenience feature that works alongside the key system, not instead of it. It can unlock the door if your enrolled fingerprint is recognized, but the vehicle still needs a valid, programmed fob present to authorize the engine to start. If you've lost your only fob, the fingerprint gets you into the car and that's it. You'll still need a replacement fob programmed to your vehicle before you're driving anywhere.

2023 Genesis Gv60 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call out of Carlton Hills on a Tuesday afternoon. GV60 owner, parked in her driveway, and the car would not acknowledge her fob at all.

Door handles weren't lighting up, no response when she grabbed them, and the start button was just showing her a key-not-detected warning on the cluster. She'd already tried holding the fob directly against the start button, which sometimes works as a backup on these when the battery is low. Nothing.

She told me she thought the whole key was dead and wanted to know if I could make a new one on-site. I told her I'd come take a look before assuming anything.

When I got there I asked her the usual questions. Any water exposure? Dropped it recently? She mentioned she'd left it in a bag at the gym for a few hours in the heat. Not ideal for a fob with active electronics.

I opened it up on the hood. The CR2450 read low on voltage. Not dead, just low enough that the vehicle's passive entry system was no longer getting a strong enough signal to wake the handles. Swapped the battery, reseated everything, and handed it back to her.

She grabbed the door handle and it responded immediately. Started the car. Fingerprint scanner worked. Every one of the eight buttons checked out.

She'd been quoted a replacement fob and programming at the dealer before she called me. She saved a good chunk just by having someone come out and actually diagnose the thing instead of replacing it. Took me about twenty minutes including the drive up from my side of Santee.

Genesis Gv60 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2023 Genesis GV60 key fob have?▼

Eight. It's one of the larger fobs on the market right now. The button count reflects how much this car can do remotely. When I program a replacement on-site, I run through every button before I hand it back to you. I'm not leaving your driveway in Carlton Hills with a half-working fob.
