I was already wrapping up near Torrey Pines when the call came in. Late evening, valet lot, Del Mar. Her purse had been taken while she was distracted inside -- keys, wallet, everything in it.
She borrowed a phone from a store clerk and started making calls. The dealer told her husband they could order parts and get to it in three to five business days, and the car would need to be towed to them because there were no keys to drive it anywhere.
She had a 2023 Genesis GV70 sitting in that lot with zero paired fobs. Zero. That is not a spare-key job. That is all-keys-lost, and the two situations are handled completely differently.
When all keys are gone, especially after a theft, I do not just program fresh hardware -- I wipe the vehicle's key memory entirely first. Every previously paired fob, including the stolen one, gets erased from the immobilizer. The thief ends up holding something that will not start or unlock that car. Then I register two new fobs from scratch through the OBD port, cut an emergency blade to match the lock, and test every function before I close my bag.
I had both fobs working and the mechanical blade confirmed before mall security finished their sweep of the lot. She drove home that night.
The dealer estimate was a multi-day wait, a tow bill, and a number that made her husband go quiet on the phone. She paid a fraction of that, on site, and the stolen fob is permanently dead to the vehicle.
