2024 Genesis Gv70
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a smart key and how does it actually work on the GV70?

The GV70 smart key has two separate jobs happening inside one shell. There's the RF side -- the buttons that send a wireless signal to lock, unlock, and trigger other functions. Then there's the transponder side, which is a separate communication between the key and the vehicle's immobilizer. That second layer is what authorizes the engine to run. The vehicle checks for a valid enrolled key every time you start it. If the key isn't recognized, it won't start.

Q: I have a spare GV70 key but I never had it programmed. Can you add it to the car?

Yes, and it's a smarter move than waiting until you're locked out. Adding a second key while you still have a working one is faster and simpler than all-keys-lost. The existing key stays enrolled, I add the spare through the OBD port, and you leave with two functional fobs. Do it now rather than after you need it.

Q: The GV70 cluster is showing a key warning but my fob seems fine. What's actually going on?

A key-not-detected warning on the GV70 cluster doesn't always point straight to the fob. There are a few places to look before assuming the key itself has failed. Start with the CR2032 battery in the fob. Even a relatively new cell can drop voltage unevenly, and the GV70's fob tray is particular about how the battery sits. A slightly off-center cell causes the same warning as a dead one.

2024 Genesis Gv70 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Ferry Landing has a certain rhythm to it. Boats, brokers, people moving fast between the water and the parking lot. That's the world this job landed in.

A boat broker had parked his 2024 Genesis GV70 in the lot near the water and somewhere between the dock and the walkway, the fob disappeared. Best guess was it went into the bay. No spare at home, no way to start the car, and the nearest Genesis dealer was over an hour away with no guarantee they could fit him in same day.

He'd already called another locksmith before he called me. That locksmith's suggestion was to drill the door lock cylinder. The quote was over $600 and he'd be left with a damaged car.

I drove out to Ferry Landing and got to work on site. Using a non-destructive decoding tool designed for the GV70's lock profile, I read the wafer positions inside the door lock without touching the internals. That gave me the exact cut depths for a working blade. I cut the emergency blade, built out a new fob, and ran the all-keys-lost enrollment sequence through the OBD port to register the new key to the vehicle security system. The old fob, wherever it was sitting at the bottom of the bay, got erased out of the system in the same step.

He watched the whole thing from about four feet away, which I don't mind. When the door opened clean and the cluster confirmed the key, he just nodded.

No drilling. No cylinder replacement. His original lock works exactly as it did before I showed up. The other locksmith's approach would have left a hole in the door and a bill to match.

Genesis Gv70 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2024 Genesis GV70 smart key have?▼

Eight. That's a larger layout than most brands run, and the GV70 fob is on the bigger side physically to fit them. When I replace and program a fob for this vehicle, I walk through every button and confirm each function is responding before I close the job. A fob that locks and unlocks but has a dead button somewhere isn't a finished job.
