A guy drove out to me from De Luz with his 2011 Genesis Coupe. He'd been dealing with an intermittent key warning for about two weeks, sometimes the car saw his fob, sometimes it didn't. He replaced the fob battery himself and it helped for maybe three days, then the same issue came back. He figured the fob was done.
I sat with him and went through it before assuming anything. Fob signal was actually fine. The issue was the battery contact inside the fob housing had a small bend from whoever changed the battery before him, probably pried it open with something too thick. The contact wasn't maintaining consistent pressure on the new battery, so the fob would read fine cold but drop out after the fob warmed up in his pocket.
I opened it on the hood, straightened the contact, reseated the battery correctly, and tested every function including remote lock, unlock, and the ability of the push-to-start system to recognize the fob in the cabin.
Then I walked the car. Checked both door handles, checked the start sequence, drove it a short distance and let it sit, then tried again. Solid every time.
He asked what the dealer would have done. I told him they'd probably order a new fob and program it on a return visit. He would have paid for a part he didn't need and waited however long it took to come in. Instead he drove home with the original fob working, same afternoon he called.
