I got a call from a guy in The Crosby section of Rancho Santa Fe. He was a disabled veteran, used a wheelchair, and his only smart key had stopped working remotely.
The push-button start was still responding, barely, but the door handles weren't unlocking on approach and the fob buttons were doing nothing. Getting to a Kia dealer across town wasn't a small ask for him. His aide wasn't available that day.
I drove out to meet him where he was parked.
First thing I did was check the fob battery. CR2032, which is what these take, was reading low enough on my tester that I swapped it right there. That brought the buttons back. But the passive entry, the walk-up handle unlock, was still inconsistent. I went through the door handle sensors with him watching from his chair. Passenger side was clean. Driver side had some grime worked into the sensor face. Wiped it down, retested, and it started catching reliably.
He hadn't needed a full key replacement at all. What he needed was someone who would come to him, take five minutes to actually diagnose the thing instead of quoting a new fob on the phone, and fix what was actually broken.
He mentioned the dealer had told him to bring it in and they'd "take a look." That's a lot of logistics for a man who can't just hop in and drive across town. He said it like it was just a fact, not a complaint.
That's the part of this job I don't take lightly.
