I got a call out to the Bancroft area of Spring Valley on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner of a 2021 Land Rover Defender had just come back from a weekend trail run and his smart key was giving him a key-not-detected warning every time he walked up to the truck. He had already replaced the CR2032 himself. Battery wasn't the issue.
I pulled up and the first thing I did was test both fobs at multiple points around the vehicle. The driver's door handle was inconsistent. The passenger side was rock solid. We went ahead and verified both keys were fully enrolled and reading correctly. Everything was clean on the key side. The antenna circuit on that door was the source, not something I could fix on site with a mobile kit, but at least he knew exactly what he was dealing with before spending money in the wrong direction.
He thanked me and mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get a diagnostic appointment. I was there in the afternoon, had an answer before dinner.
