I got a call from Downtown Escondido late on a weeknight. An overnight ER tech, parked in her townhouse garage, had a CX-30 that wouldn't acknowledge her fob at all. Not a weak signal situation. Full no-recognition. She'd already tried holding the fob up to the start button, which is the right move when the battery is critically low, and got nothing. She was already looking up tow companies.
I told her to wait.
She had one key. One fob, dead to the car, and no backup. That's an all-keys-lost job. On the 2021 CX-30, that means connecting to the OBD port, pulling the security PIN, resetting the keyless system, and then registering fresh fobs through the process. There's a timed security wait built into the Mazda procedure, so you can't rush it. The system needs to complete its own countdown before it will accept new keys. I brought two new fobs because the procedure on this vehicle requires both to be registered together to close out correctly.
We did the whole job in her garage. She watched the dash, saw the system recognize the new fob the first time she touched the door handle, and that was it. Tested both fobs on every function, tested the physical backup blade inside one of the fobs on the door lock cylinder, and made sure the start button was happy before I packed up.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a multi-day wait just for the appointment, plus the tow. She got it handled the same night, on her own driveway, for a fraction of that.
