I got a call from a woman in The Crosby section of Rancho Santa Fe on a Thursday morning. Her 2003 Mazda Tribute had been sitting in her driveway since the night before. She had one key, it had been her only key for years, and now it would not start the car. Engine cranked fine, then died within two seconds. Every time.

I cut a new blade to her vehicle using the original for reference, transferred to a new key head with a fresh chip, and programmed it through the OBD port. First start on the new key, the car ran.
She mentioned the dealer had told her over the phone that she would need to leave the car, they would need to verify the VIN, order the key blank, and book time with their tech. She was looking at days, not hours. I was in her driveway for under an hour.
The worn key thing is worth paying attention to on these older single-key vehicles. By the time the blade looks bad, the housing has usually been flexed a few hundred times already.
